Scrolling through r/Crystals and r/Gemstones, you’ll find the same complaints over and over. A buyer posts a photo of their new “obsidian” skull, asking the community to confirm what they already suspect. The comments come in: round bubbles, wrong luster, too light — fake.
One Redditor described holding a counterfeit piece that felt “unnervingly warm and light,” while the real deal had that “dense, cool heaviness characteristic of true silicate glass”. Another noted that a $5 bead from a market stall revealed “perfect, round gas bubbles trapped inside” under a loupe — the fingerprint of manufactured glass.
The problem is widespread. And it’s getting worse as demand rises.
The global Obsidian Rough market was valued at $83.15 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $105 million by 2032, growing at a 3.3% CAGR. The price spectrum is extremely polarized. Bottom-tier black obsidian trades by the ton at minimal prices, while top-tier Rainbow and Fire varieties command scarcity premiums as sole global sources.
That price spread creates a massive incentive for fraud. Imitation obsidian — black glass manufactured in furnaces — can be produced for a fraction of the cost of natural volcanic glass and sold at premium prices to unsuspecting buyers.
Here’s how to spot the difference.
What to do: Use a 10x loupe or your phone’s macro lens. Examine the stone closely, especially around edges and any polished surfaces.
What to look for: Natural obsidian has no perfect round bubbles. It may contain tiny, needle-like crystallites (cristobalite) or subtle flow bands — swirls that look like frozen smoke. Manufactured glass, on the other hand, traps perfectly round, spherical gas bubbles during the cooling process.
Why this works: The cooling environment is entirely different. Natural obsidian forms when lava cools rapidly in the open air. Factory glass is poured into molds, trapping air in predictable spherical shapes.
What the factory knows: We reject rough with excessive inclusions. But we also know that a complete absence of any internal feature — no bubbles, no flow bands, nothing — is its own red flag.
What to do: Shine a strong flashlight through the thinnest edge of the piece.
What to look for: Even “black” obsidian transmits light on thin edges, appearing translucent brown or gray. If the stone is completely opaque — no light passes through at all — it’s likely not obsidian.
The academic method: A study published in the Journal of Geoscience found that when light passes through a sample, the transmitted color reveals the material. If the light changes to blue, purple, or red, the sample is black glass. If the light stays basically unchanged, the sample is likely obsidian.
Why this works: Natural obsidian has trace iron and other elements that create a warm, brownish-gray translucency. Factory glass uses different colorants that shift the transmitted light toward cooler or more vivid hues.
What to do: Try to scratch the stone with a steel knife or a piece of window glass. Alternatively, try to scratch a piece of glass with the obsidian.
What to look for: Obsidian rates 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale. It will scratch window glass (which is softer, around 5) but will be scratched by quartz (hardness 7).
Why this works: Both natural obsidian and factory glass are technically glass. Their hardness ranges overlap. But if the piece is significantly softer (easily scratched by a steel knife) or harder (resistant to scratching), it’s likely a different material entirely.
What to do: Hold the piece in your hand. Compare its weight to another stone of similar size.
What to look for: Obsidian has a specific gravity of approximately 2.35–2.6. It feels dense and solid — heavier than it looks. Plastics and resin imitations feel noticeably lighter.
Why this works: Glass imitations can have similar density to obsidian — both are silicate materials. But resin and plastic fakes are much lighter, and some glass slags are noticeably less dense. The “heft” test is best used in combination with other methods.
What to do: Examine any broken or chipped edges on the piece. If the piece is unbroken, look at the base or any unfinished surface.
What to look for: Obsidian breaks with conchoidal fracture — smooth, curved, shell-like surfaces with razor-sharp edges. This is the hallmark of glass.
Why this works: Both natural and manufactured glass break conchoidally. But molded glass pieces often have smooth, uniform surfaces everywhere because they never go through a cutting or breaking process. If a piece has mold seams or perfectly uniform edges with no natural breakage patterns, it was poured, not formed by nature.
What to look for: Obsidian has a bright vitreous (glassy) luster. Polished obsidian can be mirror-like. But if the shine looks too uniform — like automotive paint rather than natural glass — that’s a warning sign.
What to look for: Real obsidian is black, brown, mahogany, or sheen-banded — at most translucent smoky gray. If you see “obsidian” in vivid blue, green, or clear candy colors, it’s not natural obsidian. Those are manufactured glasses dyed to imitate something they’re not.
What to look for: Examine the surface for mold seams — faint lines where two halves of a mold came together. Natural obsidian has no mold seams. It also won’t have greenish edges or perfectly even color distribution across the entire piece.

The good news? You don’t need a lab to spot most fakes. A 10x loupe, a strong flashlight, and a few seconds of attention are usually enough.
If you’re buying wholesale, insist on video verification of actual stock. Ask to see the pieces under strong light. Request edge photos. And if a supplier won’t show you the details before you pay, that’s a red flag by itself.
